PDA as a Party List...an Option?

by JV Jaurigue, DDM

PDA as a Party List………..an option? The National Elections this coming May is fast approaching. Streamers of various candidates are “trashfully” draped all over the place. The Annual PDA Convention was moved a couple of days earlier so as not to coincide with the coming polls.

Interestingly the PDA, though will be having its own annual election of officers, will be among the party list candidates for the coming national elections. Thanks to past president of Makati and now currently President of the PDA Dr. Renato Sison, our association is gearing up for an opportunity to take part in the House of Representatives. The question somehow, now that the tone has been set is, will a congressional seat be an answer to some of the problems in the PDA? Having participated on the House of Delegates, the PDA’s version of the Lower House, I was able to witness first hand the process of legislation. Outside of this experience, I have no inclination whatsoever as far as how the national legislative process works. Much of my awareness was somehow enlightened by the recently concluded impeachment trial. Nonetheless, I learned to respect the process of legislation. I recognized the importance of having a legislative arm. The playing field is widened by legislative options. And the fruits of it all will never come to pass unless we have an opportunity speak, represent and vote for a particular issue. Representation matters a lot, for it influences the shape of our future.

To have a representative gives us identity, much more a voice. I guess this is where the power rests. I do recognize that we need good legislators who can author bills that hold a noble purpose. Our country is blessed with a few. But no matter how noble the intentions are, without the influence of a vote, it’s nothing. We are nothing. It’s just a piece of paper. The father of legislation and democracy whoever he is made sure that our society takes a path of respectfulness and orderliness by way of recognition of each other’s rights. Each and everyone or us deserve to live a respectable and comfortable life.

Unfortunately, our individual interests can be so variable that at times they go against each other. That’s why laws are made. Having said that, let us therefore take our heads to a higher level as we exercise our right to vote. We need good legislators. We need good leaders. Let us not think of ways that can make the manner of our voting convenient, but instead think of how we can make things in the future convenient for all of us. And since the PDA is throwing its hat in the political arena, let’s throw in our hearts as well. Congress may not hold all the answers, but being there doesn’t make us any weaker either. In fact, it gives us a chance. It gives us a voice. So allow me to say that in the coming elections, vote for the right people and vote for the PDA. We need to widen our options.
