You Can Help Poor Patients

By Nancy Albert

It is a terrible feeling when you consult with patients who cannot afford for you to fix a smile that has been ruined. Even worse, you know that their future earning potential is nearly always jeopardized by their appearance! I’ve entered the dental products industry from the back door. For 16 years, my company, Dr. Bukk, Inc. has manufactured and sold novelty fake teeth designed to make the wearer look horrible! (www.drbukk.com)

Four years ago, I partnered with a Korean-born dental materials consultant to develop a beautiful version of my fake teeth. Now, there is a new product, Imako® that can offer cosmetic relief for the upper mandible for a cost of under $50 to the trade. It is an extremely thin (1mm.) flexible laminate with the appearance of healthy teeth and gums, that can be fitted to almost any case except buck teeth in about 5 minutes. Even dentists cannot tell when someone is wearing Imako®; the appearance is a complete deception. The removable device clips on to the patient’s teeth after the low-melt thermoplastic backing is custom molded. Properly fitted, it snaps into place and does not impede the bite. In fact, it can correct speech problems caused by front tooth loss! Practically any tooth loss situation can be cosmetically hidden by constructing partial plates with additional thermoplastic. It can even be fashioned into a type of lightweight faux denture for those who either hate their upper denture or cannot afford dentures.

The drawbacks are that the wearer must avoid very hot foods, and not use the device for biting through foods. Over 100,000 of my novelty teeth, which are made of the same thermoplastic, have been sold over 16 years without any incidence of irritation, so I am completely confident of the product’s biocompatibility. The silicone facade is made of FDA approved materials for use in dentistry. While the Imako® Cosmetic Shell is not the ideal situation, it can make a tremendous cosmetic improvement without harm. The theory is that by utilizing any method you can to uplift the most unfortunate, you will enable them to afford better care in the future.
