History by: Dr. Consuelo Nabuya-Nazareno Oral implantology has been the object of recent interest among dental practitioners and the public. The impressive attendance in seminars and conferences in this discipline has been matched by a growing concern for personal health. This interest has been enhanced by successes in the transplant and implants of vital organs in the human body. Many Dental patients hope that this may be in the panacea to their dental problems.
The modern dental implant started more than half a century ago abroad. This was first known to Philippine dentists during the PDA Presidency of Dr. Dominador Santos, Sr. when an invited lecturer from the United States spoke about subperiosteal implants to a few prominent dentists at the house of Dr. Ermelo Vegel de Dios. However, for some reason the practice of this discipline did not prosper.
In the late sixties, Dr. Cayetano Eustaquio, Jr., who was trained at the University of Illinois in prosthodontics, introduced in screw implants with unsatisfactory results, thus discouraging him from further pursuing the practice of dental implants. He was followed by Dr. Rufino Achacoso, a famous prosthodontist who performed an intraosseous implant years ago but lost interest. Lately, however his interest was rekindled by the successful results of dental implants as well as his awareness of the development of new materials and improved technique and procedures.
Nineteen years ago, Dr. Eusebio M. Nazareno, an oral surgeon and Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Impalntologists, started his practice in dental implants with the use of blade vents made of surgical vitalium. In June 1983, at the urging and request of his friends to share his kmnowledge in this specialty, a seminar was performed under the umbrella of the Centro Escolar University College of Dentistry, with the blessing of the late Dr. Galvan and President Dionisio Tingco. Sixty two dentists participated in the course which had both theoretical and practical requirements. Among the salent requirements in the practical portion was to perform one or more implants on actual patients and their appropriate prosthesis. The participants also has to assists, for ten times, their own classmates in the surgical insertion implant. Only when they have completed these requirements were they entitled to a certificate.
Early in the Course of the seminar, Dr. Nazareno expressed his idea of forming a National Association. He stated that as a legitimate national organization, affiliation with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists will be facilitated and creates access to up-to-date literature and possibly even an invitation to international conferences.
On September 28, 1983, at my invitation, a luncheon meeting of a group of seminar-participants was held at the Top of the Hilton, in the hopes of obtaining a consensus on the creation of an association. A unanimous decision was reached and the first election for the committee to formulate the constitution and by-laws was held. Col. Justito Dacuycuy was elected chairman with Drs. Vie Abastillas, Naty Granada, Carmencita Cordon and myself as members.
In a series of meetings shortly thereafter and held under the supervision of Dr. Nazareno, a preliminary draft was made by a select committee regarding the proposed name of the society, its preamble, purposes, nature and jurisdiction as well as its color and symbol were taken. Member qualifications, rights, duties and other matters concerning the future by-laws were likewise discussed and drafted. This committees work came to a close at the fourth and final meeting on November 4, 1983 where a final draft was printed and copies forwarded to the founding members for their perusal.
The presentation of the final draft came at a meeting held at the Hyatt Hotel on November 20, 1983. In this general meeting, the proposed constitution and by-laws were discussed and finally approved with same modification and election of ad-interim officers were helf. Elected were: Dr. Justito Dacuycuy, President; Dr. Consuelo M. Nabuya, Vice-President; Dr. Rosano Severino, Secretary; Dr. Nati Granada, Treasurer; Drs. Heminia Balagot, Ligaya Chan Virata, Katherine Chen, Conrado Lucero & Filomena Villarina, Board Members; Dr. Victor Abastillas, PRO; and Dr. Bonifacio de Guzman, Auditor.
These first officers led the assoiation to a first year full of milestones and accomplishments. The succeeding sets of officers have continued in the best traditions of service and excellence shown by the first Board of Directors.
As the association continued to grow, interest in oral implants was lso enhanced with an audio-visual presentation of patients during the mid-year convention of the Philippine Dental Associations at the Sheraton Hotel on February 5, 1986, under the chairmanship of Dr. Baguio.
After eight years the association was able to secure registration from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Such as, it now has a separate personality. Dr. Nazareno also awarded the first Fellowship during this period.
Several foreign dental and commercial manufacturers of dental implants advocating different systems sponsored a conference and sent foreign lecturrs to give seminars. Foremost among them were the following: Branemark, Calcitek (which manufactures integral implants), Stryker, I.M.Z. Implants and Packel Dental Electronics which makes "Sustain" Leader Implants. These Companies produce mostly cylinder implants, as well as a few blades. Many more modalities and system which followed with the improvement of the quality of metal design. More recently, the association was able to purchased three systems which it uses to familiarize members.
In a very important move, the association has recognized the need for an umbrella organization, considering the growing number of practitioners as well as the different systems now being marketed. With this in mind, the organization invited prominent practitioners to join, regardless of the system which they use, in the hope of fostering camaraderie and good professional relations.
