The Triune God |
|
Today, the Church celebrates a great Feast, the Solemnity of the Most
Holy Trinity (Jn 3:16-18).
The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian Faith and of Christian Life. The belief that there are three persons in one God is distinctive of Christianity. It is one of the fundamental beliefs of religion; it belongs to the heart of what Christianity means. The Holy Trinity is a mystery that we may not fully comprehend. Yet, we profess our Faith in our Triune God as we begin and end our prayers, and preface our undertakings, especially crucial ones, by making the sign of the Cross and invoking thereby the blessings of God "in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit". How did we come to know of the Holy Trinity? Through revelation by the Father. God disclosed Himself and His plan of salvation to man. In communicating to man His plan to save him. God likewise revealed who He Himself is to man - a Trinity. In the fullness of revelation, God is revealed in the Trinity of Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Father loves the children He has created. He sends the Son ewhen they stray from Him. The San, in loving obedience, gives up His life for the life of the World. The Holy Spirit is sent at the completion of the work of the Son to reveal the love of the Father and the Son and make it operative in life of believers. In the Immanent Trinity, the roles of the three Divine persons are; the Father as the Creator, the Son as the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as the Sanctifier. Most Holy Trinity, thank You for being to us, a Father, a Brother and a Friend!
